Logic Puzzles – See today’s logic puzzle in the SOAR folder. We completed “Barber Shop Quartet” as a class and the students completed “Black History” independently.
Chess - (Pawn Game) I paired the students based on ability and we played the “Pawn Game.” This chess drill gives students practice with pawn movement and strategy. We discussed thinking before we move and different strategies.
I attended MS. Rashid’s chess meeting. He hopes to get high school students to come down to the lower campus to teach/play with the elementary students. I will keep you posted regarding the status of Drew’s chess club.
PBL – We watched “Land of Abundance.” We stopped the video at times, took notes, and discussed what we’re learning. Topics discussed were: Pharaohs, Nile River, Upper/Lower Egypt, Isis/Osiris, Papyrus, etc.
NOTE: As part of this PBL we discuss the beliefs i.e. religion among Ancient Egyptians. I carefully explain these are the beliefs of Ancient Egyptians. Children often ask questions such as, “Is this real?” Some questions lead me to respond with, “Talk to your family about your beliefs.”
Analogies – We completed a front/back page of analogies. (See SOAR folder). IF your child missed 0 = check plus, 1-3 = check, 4 or more= still learning analogies.
Question It (creativity) – I write an answer on the board and the students write a question. Students try to think of a unique question. Today’s answer is: bubble. (see SOAR folder).
What would you do? (creativity) – The students illustrated and/or wrote an answer to the prompt: If you were invisible for a day, what would you do? (see SOAR folder).
