Logic Puzzles – See today’s logic puzzle in the SOAR folder. We completed “Special Delivery” as a class and the students completed “Lost and Found” independently.
Second grade is beginning to solve multi-grid logic puzzles which means they’re becoming more challenging to solve. For logic puzzle practice, go to the resource section of the web site and scroll down to logic puzzles.
Chess - (Pawn Game & Knight’s Tour) I paired the students based on ability and we played the “Pawn Game.” This chess drill gives students practice with pawn movement and strategy. We discussed thinking before we move and different strategies.
The Knight’s Tour is a single player game that teaches knight moves and strategy. Place 15/16 white pieces in one quadrant of the board. Place the black knight in a corner and make legal moves capturing all of the white pieces. The ultimate goal is to capture all pieces except one.
PBL – Today students became geniuses about Pharaohs. I supplied student pairs with a reading packet and Chromebook. Students had an hour to become a genius regarding pharaohs – “Genius Hour.” First students referred to questions on the SMART board to guide their research. Next, students shared used laptops to conduct self-guided research on pharaohs. Students chose to look up information such as: Who was the first pharaoh, who were women pharaohs, who was the youngest pharaoh, etc.
Next week, students, will create their own pharaoh – when the pharaoh ruled, create a pharaoh symbol, explain his/her type of rule, etc.
Centers – Students who completed the pharaoh research were allowed time on Cool Math.
