Logic Puzzles – See today’s logic puzzle in the SOAR folder. We completed “Student Council” as a class, and I challenged the students to complete “Wind Chimes” independently. Please check your child’s SOAR folder for this activity.
Chess – (Pawn Game) I paired the students based on ability and we played the “Pawn Game.” This chess drill gives students practice with pawn movement and strategy. We discussed thinking before we move and different strategies.
I attended MS. Rashid’s chess meeting. He hopes to get high school students to come down to the lower campus to teach/play with the elementary students. I will keep you posted regarding the status of Drew’s chess club.
PBL – “How do I create an educational science game that parents and children will enjoy?” Today we read “How the World has Fallen in Love with Minecraft.” We read the article and discussed new vocabulary words: drab, economic, opting, precision, and fanatical. Additionally, we discussed the main idea, compared Minecraft to FIFA 14, as well as the success of Minecraft.
As we prepare to design our science games, we will continually discuss what makes games successful – marketing, design, etc.
Question It (creativity) – I write an answer on the board and the students write a question. Students try to think of a unique question. Today’s answer is: bubble. (see SOAR folder).
What would you do? (creativity) – The students illustrated and/or wrote an answer to the prompt: If you were invisible for a day, what would you do? (see SOAR folder).
Analogies – We completed 2 analogies crossword puzzles. (See SOAR folder).
Centers – We ran out of time.
Grades – I do not give number grades in SOAR. However, I give marks to let students and families know how their child tackled certain activities. Check+ = solved it easily and correctly, check = solved it with a mistake or question, check- = I’m still learning how to do this activity/task.
