Brain Booster – We completed a brain booster that involved 2nd grade math yet some tricky logic. Most students solved today’s brain booster; however, several students were stumped by the logical and higher level thinking skills.
Chess – We discussed creating pins in chess. Student groups worked together to solve chess puzzles involving pins. The puzzle reads, “White to Move” for example. Puzzlers examine the match and determine the next move for “white” to create a pin. Students write chess notation for their answers – i.e. Qe4 or Rg7 (see SOAR folder).
Families who play chess with your children – discuss forks, pins, and skewers as you’re playing. For parents who don’t play – ask your child to teach you. Research supports the connection between academic success and chess.
KenKen – Students solved 4 KenKen math/logic problems. Today’s puzzles introduced multiplication and division – easy levels.
PBL – “How can I share my community (Atlanta) with the world? Today we continued to work on our sites. Students are working to write about their Atlanta community. Have you seen your child’s page?
