Brain Booster - Can you solve it? Click here. Only one child solved today's puzzle. It seems that counting money is a lost art. Practice makes perfect - hint hint. (higher level thinking skills, math & money skills)
Logic Puzzles - We solved 2 logic puzzles today - "Synonyms" & "Pool Party." The children are becoming more proficient in solving logic puzzles. These puzzles foster higher level thinking and reading comprehension skills. As the children become more competent, I will introduce more complex puzzles. Ask your child if he/she was able to solve today's puzzles. (see SOAR folder). (higher level thinking skills, logic reasoning, reading comprehension).
PBL "How does Design Impact Flight?" - We discussed thrust, weight, drag, and lift as they relate to flight. We watched a video showing how to create a "Delta Plane." When we finished our planes we went to the stairwell and each child flew his/her plane 3 times and charted their results. Next, I taught the children how to calculate the average distance of their 3 flights. Yes! We divided their total distance of flights by 3. I taught them to divide using a reverse skip counting method. "How many 3's can I fit into 21?" When a remainder was involved, we considered that a bust and didn't count the bust. Understanding average is challenging to our young learners; however, several children are beginning to understand dividing in a reverse skip counting manner.
Crazy Words - (see pics below) I gave groups made up words. Each group had to define the word, illustrate the word, and use it in a sentence. Student groups presented their word to the class: pelp, quin, lorp, blub, chep, mox. Ask your child about his/her word. (Advanced Communication Skills, Creativity Skills).
