It’s time for the 1st Grade SOAR update.
Brain Booster - Can you solve it?
What invention allows you to see through walls?
Daily Share – (communication skills)
Analogies - run is to verb as pretty is to _____ AND 26+39 is to 65 as 38+57 is to _____ . I think the children (most of them) enjoyed today's math challenge (higher level/critical thinking skills).
PBL/Ocean - We began researching our ocean animals. Students are discovering the challenges associated with independent research. They're quick to feel that they can't find the answer; however, through perseverance, they're discovering the joys of independent learning.
Students may start bringing recycled materials to construct their animals. Send the materials in a bag labeled with your child's name. Please send specific materials for your child's animal only. My room is small, and we can't afford to become Drew's recycling center (higher level thinking & advanced research skills).
Creativity – After checking if everyone dressed up for Halloween, I asked the children to write a story using their dress up character as a main character to an original story. Ask your child to see his/her story. The children put a great deal of time into their rough draft, final draft, and illustration (creativity & communication skills).
Critical Thinking – The first grade team asked that all students have the opportunity to attend the 1st Grade Market; therefore, following recess, all students attended the market with their regular class. I hope to get back to logic puzzles next week (higher level thinking skills).
Game Centers: Dizios, Q-Bits, Keva blocks, Rush Hour, Qwirkle, iPads (problem solving, higher level thinking, logic reasoning).
