Analogies – We started the day with analogies. After a quick review and completing some together, the students attempted some on their own. (see SOAR folder). If your child has a check plus with a star, he/she was able to complete today’s analogies independently.
Question It (creativity) – I write an answer on the board and the students write a question. Students try to think of a unique question. Today’s answer is: red. (see SOAR folder).
Creativity/Critical Thinking – We created a list of 5 items that each child would take on a year round trip. Ask your child about what he/she would take on the trip. (Suitcases and families were not included as part of the list). Creativity and unique thinking are encouraged.
PBL – Using last week’s website, students created 4 vocabulary pages for their research journals. We discussed: thrust (power), lift (up), drag (back), and weight (down). Although a true understanding of these words with regard to flight is a bit complicated, I am trying to give the children a basic understanding of the words in relation to flying.
Math/Internet - When we finished, I let the children visit CoolMath-Games.com to explore some educational (loosely stated) math games. This activity helped me assess who has experience with navigating the Internet and using a Chromebook. As we continue to dive into our PBL unit, students will be expected to navigate the Internet and answer research questions on their own. My overall assessment – we have much work to accomplish with using the netbooks.
Paris’ mom will join use next week as we make paper planes, fly them, measure their distances, and calculate the average distance of 3 flights.
Chess - (Rooks vs. 5 Pawns) – Today we played a game white rook on H1 vs. 5 black pawns (b7 – f7). In this game, if played correctly, the rook should ALWAYS win. We discussed rooks attacking from behind to gain an advantage in addition to taking advantage of its ability to move swiftly across the board.
Logic Puzzles – We skipped logic puzzles today. We’ll get back to them next week.
