Morning Share – Per our usual, we started the day building our community with share time.
Chess – (Queen’s Raid Opening) - Today we practiced the Queen’s Raid opening. This is an aggressive opening where white brings out the Queen on the 2nd move. We discussed the best way for black to defend the Queen’s Raid.
PBL – We continued with our entry event of the ocean by watching: Octanauts - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIzFirynv8k. We watched the video, stopped periodically, discussed, and took notes in our ocean journals.
Next, we added 4 vocabulary words in our science journals Plankton, Penetrate, Photosynthesis, & Microscopic. We discussed the words, researched the words online (as a class), and illustrated in our journals.
Last we watched a short video on the Sunlit Zone https://www.twigcarolina.com/film/oceans-sunlight-zone-3358/ . Next week students will have the opportunity to explore (via internet) the Sunlit Zone with a partner.
Question It (creativity) – I say an answer and the students write a question. Students try to think of a unique question. Today’s answer: sun/son. I said “sun/son.” 2/12 children wrote questions about “son” whereas the remainder of the class chose “sun.”
Transformations – We completed a brief activity that assessed our higher order thinking skills. Children show their ability to independently identify the next shape in a pattern (see SOAR folder for the activity).
Trivia Question - We ended the day practicing our research skills by tackling Drew's trivia question of the day: What were the 1st three HBCUs established? When Paris' parents walked in, I challenged them to the question. Paris' dad knew the answer. Little did I know, he has a book coming out in the fall....the topic? HBCUs. What are the odds?
Birthday – We celebrated Paris’ birthday and ended with fun centers.
